Dash Gauges Empty
PostSubject: Dash Gauges   Dash Gauges EmptyMon Sep 28, 2009 9:11 pm

I have an intermittent dash gauge problem. The spedo and tach occasionally go to zero and the "airbag" light comes on. Less frequnently the remainder of the gauges go flat and all the "warning lights" come on. I plan on pulling the gauge cluster tommorow night at work and cleaning the contacts on the wiring harness. Any other suggestions would be helpful. BTW it is a 98 TJ. Most of the time when this happens the gauges can be fixed by pounding on the top of the dash.

Grounds can be tricky, even a good looking ground can be bad. also as a trouble shooting aid, have you done anything like adding a CB or a Radio upgrade.

When it comes to a dash in a newer vehicle, may be more than one ground, find them all.

God luck

I looked on "Jeep Forum" and found a couple of different things. A couple of guys had sucess with just cleaning the connectors on the back of the dash cluster. Others had to fix the ground wires. I am going to tear into tonight. I have had this problem since I have owned the Jeep...since then I have added a CB and new radio head unit and the problem got no worse or better.

Pulled the dash cluster and all the contacts were really dirty..cleaned them and began to trace ground wires and found one that looked "loose". tighten it up and put the dash cluster back in. (i did not put the dash completely back together) I have driven it to work two days and no loss of dash gauges..so I think it is fixed.

Jeeps are never fixed.. Just one problem is gone and you are waiting for the next one to pop up.
