Subject: May Comp Weekend Mon May 04, 2009 10:26 am
What a weekend!!! Alot of things went very well and alot didnt go so well but I know I had a great time and I am actually ready to wheel today..
Most of the plans we had talked didnt come together but as usual we made some compromises and made the best of it. I do want to thank Tom (Fallston YJ) for putting in some crazy hours the two weeks prior to help me get my jeep, his jeep, the comp sign and everything else ready for the weekend.
We started off Friday with a late start but ended up at the park around 8pm. Tom, Tommy and Chris L. were camping at the park and Tina and I were at the comfort. We hung out with them for a bit and dropped the trailer and jeep off and then called it a night around 10pm. Saturday we woke to find Paul, Stacey (his daughter), Mark, (his son, Mark edit his name in, I remember Josh but not the younger one), Waldo and company, Tom K and his brother all at the comfort. Once at the park we found Chris Taylor and Joe had joined us that morning.
The day started off with Chris preparing for comp and everyone else getting ready for a great day. The preplanned plans of having a tent set up for club support ended up not be worth it due us not getting a area to set up that we felt was worth the effort. I will definitely contact Bruce to make sure that doesnt happen again.
Chris was the fifth rig to run the first course and got a very good start at making a good scoring run. Once on the course and clearing I believe the third set of cones the left front suspension had dropped and the notorious spring issue showed its ugly face. The spring was hanging out and do to previous situations Joe was studying the situation. I opened my mouth and yelled to Joe to remove it totally so it would not bind up and cause a non steering situation like it had in the past. Joe did so and threw it out of the course. Chris and Joe got thru that gate and through another. They swung wide and set up for the final climb which was a serious off camber climb up the crete. Joe and Chris had planned the climb earlier and Joe had even asked me prior to the run what I thought. Everyone agreed the wide swing to the right would be the angle to take to be able to make the next obstacle at the top of the hill. Chris lined up and attempted the climb and at almost the top of the 25 foot crete hill the right front tire started to climb to sky and thats where things go alittle tricky. Chris continued to climb and it seemed like he would power out of it..... due to the extreme pucker situation Chris let out alittle like most would of done and GRAVITY took over.. The jeep stood up on its left rear and did a ballerina twirl to end up on its cage.
The first recovery attempt was unsuccessful and we waited for the crain. By the time the jeep was uprighted over 20 minutes had passed. We discussed removing the plugs but do to the coil pack being on the plugs the call was made not to do it to save time.
As Chris prepared to get ready for the next run we found out we had made the wrong decision. Chris was next up and went to start the jeep and it was hydro locked due to the oil being up in chambers. I got every one together and with the jeep in gear we attempt to roll the jeep back and forth a few times. I had Chris try again and it bumped alittle on starter but then just locked again. This was a good sign but we had very short time to continue.
We pulled the coil pack and all six plugs. I had clearly warned all people around the jeep to move away because the oil will squirt out when Chris bumps the starter..Unfortunately I was not smart enought to listen to my own warnings. I had went around to the front of the jeep and Tom was standing next to me. Chris bumped the starter and the next thing I knew I had a face full of oil. The oil came out so fast that it hit the intake tube and made a 90 degree turn to soak me and get Tom as well..
After being laughed at and photographed for a few minutes I cleaned off and we began again. We thought we got all the oil out and put all the plugs back in. We found we hadnt succeeded when the jeep was still locked when we tried to start it. We ended up pulling them again and after about 5 minutes off cranking we got atleast another half quart out.
This time was successful and the jeep started and the audience clapped and yelled with Joy.. It was like we were in a movie and the crowd was cheering us on.. (I might of indulged alittle there but it did feel that way..LOL)
cont..

Chris had used his entire 40 minute repair time and had to immediately run the next course. Once he finished that one the third course was ready for him. Chris made two fairly decent runs and he was done awaiting the final scores.
It seemed like forever that they would get the scores together and the shot out would begin. Eventually they did and do to the roll Chris was not in the top six.
We watched the class four shot out and it was very exciting. Eugene from Rose Crawlers put on a fantastic show. Here is a video of it..

After the comp we ended up back at the camping area. Tom fired up the grill and Tommy the fire and we had a fantastic dinner with some cold drinks.. We sat around the camp fire and enjoyed some great conversation and brotherhood.
Sunday morning we awoke to rain. Tico had joined us at the comfort the night before and we all met up in the lobby. After some conversation we set out to get supplies and head for the park. Once at the park we all headed out to the trails.
We headed out as a group of seven rigs and planned to find a area to take a group shot. We ran down F and hit CV trail. Just into the trail we found a group of serious rigs running a Red rock face and we stopped to watch. After a few minutes one of the rigs blew a driveshaft and we headed off. Chris and I took a side trail that was a short rock run. Tom K followed and got hung up on two rocks that hung on his axle housing and front spring. Tom K and his normal balls out approach gave it hell but was just destroying his rig. After winching him backwards he attempted to get off and got hung up again. Chris L. did some spotting and rock stacking and was successful at getting him free. Now it was Fallston Yj's attempt at clearing the rocks. Even with the extreme height advantage he too got hung up on the rocks. After alittle discussion the word was that he just need to show some horsepower. He did get alittle gas and climbed right out of the situation.
We got back into our rigs and climbed the next long rocky, muddy hill to get off that trail. I got to the top and as we were pulling away I radio'ed back to Mark if everyone was clear. He responded back that no he was hung up. We stopped and walked back down the slippery hugh hill. As I was about two feet from his rig Paul hollered out that one of the hubs was not locked. Mark then climbed right over the obstacle.. I think he just wanted to see me get my exercise climbing right back up that hill.. Thanks brother........
We next ended up on Yellow Jacket and ran it backwards. This was the spot where Tina overheated my XJ at the ADA run. I have ran it three times with the new rig and I am amazed at how easy it climbs the same obstacle. Chris L. and Tom R climbed it also. We then ran O backwards also.
Paul was now in the lead and found the black rock garden that Chris and I had ran last year. Paul radio'ed back that they would wait if we wanted to run it. I appreciated that and headed up it with Chris and Tom behind me. With some spotting from Tico and Chris T. I walked it right out. Chris L. had taken a harder line at one point (like he always does) and ended up high sided with the front axle tube into a V shaped rock. Of course the spring again came out while he was attempting to back out. After suggesting some rock stacking to Chris T. we were successful at getting him out without a winch.
The group had stopped at a section of the rock garden that seemed to make for a great photo of the group. We started to get the jeeps backed into the area and after about 45 minutes off arguing and individual suggestions we got all seven of the rigs into a space where we could get a picture. Picture to follow.........

It was lunch time and Tom and Chris needed to return to camp to get their lunch. Paul suggested he take the group to the west property and then everyone would catch up. I headed with the other group to the camp so I could take my rain jacket off which had turned into a sponge.
After eating Tina was having backpains and wanted to stay in the truck. I wouldnt leave her alone and ended up packing up for the day and heading home..
So how did the rest of the day go for the group????????

What a good weekend ! I'm going to upload the videos of Chris's flop , And a few other trails later today onto you tube. As for my damage from the "Balls to the Wall" approach my Yj suffered a Tailpipe that was bent down 90* . By the end of the day it was back in its normal postion .

It has been a while since I sat down and wrote a story, glad Matt Elick did that already. I was happy to be wheeling again, after a long sabbatical of no trails and thrills I was ready to jump into things, but this time I used caution and was a little more reserved on going crazy, especially since I dumped a lot of money to repair my rig. It runs great got it back into 80MPH at times and it handles well. However, the transfer case is another issue; it didn’t want to stay engaged long, kept popping out at the wrong times. But I managed and still had a grand time. It was great to see a lot of the guys I trails within the past. I mostly concentrated on videos and pictures; I feel we need a supper exposure timeline. I was happy that some of the members shared their pictures with me and videos. Chris thanks for the down load, but I couldn’t get it to work yet. I am waiting for Tommy to post them instead.
Most of the time I drove in 2wd, amazing things you can do with the right lift and tires. Waldo wanted Mud, so we took him to the west property where he felt at home, jumping from one puddle to another. Paul did an excellent job guiding and I believe everyone had a fantastic time.
On the way back home it was 75 mph again, the Jeep handle it like a champ! I am happy I just drove my Jeep and not the truck and trailer. Took a chance and GOD only knows I was happy to get back home in one piece and no breakage.
I spend about 3 hours last night reviewing some of the videos; unfortunately, a lot of the footage got taken at a 160 scale, Small. As soon as I realized it I corrected it and got the last remaining videos done right! I will have them loaded soon.

It has been a long time since I was at Rausch. Saturday was great. Best 5 dollars I have spent in a long time. Got a great sun burn. Had to leave Saturday night, missed wheeling Sunday. Pics and Vids are good for showing Shaggy what he missed.
