My Adventure to Texas ! Empty
PostSubject: My Adventure to Texas !   My Adventure to Texas ! EmptyWed Sep 09, 2009 12:32 am

Let me begin saying that My drive to Texas from Ocean City has been one hell of an adventure !
I'm almost done my drive to Texas I have 14hrs done, and 10 to go. At the rate I'm going It'll be 2-3 days before I make it.
After this trip Liisa and I will have a tow rig by Jan. when we come back to Md. ( She is looking on Carmax's Site now as I type this ) Mechanically the YJ is great (should I be saying this ?)
My problems began Sunday by natural bridge Va. when the ball flange on the down pipe broke .I decided to put up with the noise and boogie along about 5 miles down the road I went to down shift and the clutch pedal went to the floor. The heat melted my slave cyl. line . So the wife called AAA and had us towed to a hotel by an auto shop but they were closed for the next 2 days and the people seemed pretty sketchy and I didn't feel too comfortable leaving my belongings and Jeep with them. I called some family friends about 3-4hrs away in Knoxville Tenn which I have to pass on my way to Texas They said come on down we will get ya fixed up. So we drove there Shifting without a clutch is so much fun in the hills of Va and Tenn. BTW I had the Exhaust fixed on Monday morning. I tried to locate a slave cyl. assembly but no such luck everything was closed for the holiday. This morning I called Dave at Adams to see if he could locate the parts I needed He did find what I needed in Bristol Tenn. 90 mins away so I drove to Bristol and installed the new clutch master cyl/ slave cylinder assembly on their lot. I Headed back down on the road and 40 miles outside of Nashville I started getting bad vibrations . I thought maybe it was a U-joint was going bad so at the next stop about a mile or two down the road I needed to get gas so I checked that was fine. Then I looked at my wheels and found my problem. my LR wheel worked loose all 5 lugs that my friend said he tightened came off by hand (the 3 wheels I tightened were still tight) So Tomorrow morning I have a local shop here in Nashville installing 5 new studs on my LR I dont trust my old studs enough for the rest of the drive but a few miles to the hotel was far enough for me to limp it . I have my spare on and its tight since the lug holes on my rim are destroyed I'll get a new rim once in Tx .

Well I'm here in Texas Finally! Tomorrow I'm going to order a new rim for my lug nuts backing off mishap But I did learn I need a Tow Rig ,and that YJ's are not designed for cross country trips

I'm pretty much settled in here now My Yj is unloaded all of my stuff is put away except for the hardtop which is coming off some day this week 105* weather with a Hardtop/Doors on and no AC can get quite hot ! I need to take a trip to Home Depot and get some 3/4" pipe to make my Hardtop storage rack so I can stand the top up in the garage.

I did get a Texas OHV decal for the Jeep $10 is a lot better than the outrageous price that Md wants for assitique island. The closest Off road park is about a 35-45min drive depending on traffic. I have a feeling I'll be wheeling alot more since its closer to home No more Tents for me !

The park is very simlar to rc but thier south property is filled with Peanut Butter like Gooey Mud and no Lakes like christy.
I did find 2 4wheelparts stores within 20 mins from home, and a very good shop in Dallas to do fab work. (30. mins away)

I'm Shooting for this time next month to take the Jeep to Dallas so I can have my Cage beefed up before I hit the trails

lol when i was in technical school 4.5 hours away in Pittsburgh i drove my yj back and fourth and always complained about how it sucked to drive it and i got nervous it was going to break ( which it did several times ) my parents told me i was full of it until when i graduated and came home my mother drove it 25 minutes away to the store and when she came back told me she couldn't believe i drove that far in it. i had the exhaust break on me and also going back to school in 4 inches of snow ( they dont plow there) the soft top ripped from the seam and it was to cold for duct tape to stick im glad to hear you made it to Texas and feel your pain
